Passport Card vs. Passport Book: What Cruisers Should Know

Your travel document needs to work for your whole journey—including the journey you did not plan.

A U.S. passport card is not valid for international air travel. A passport book is valid for international travel by air, sea and land. That distinction matters when a cruise includes international ports.

Why it matters on a cruise

Some closed-loop itineraries allow eligible U.S. citizens to use alternative documents. That does not make every cruise passport-free. Your citizenship, exact route, ports and cruise line determine the requirements.

Consider an unexpected change: you miss the ship or need to fly home from another country. A passport card alone is not valid for that international flight. Understanding the difference before departure helps you plan for more than embarkation day.

Before you book

  • Identify your exact sailing and every port.

  • Check the documentation rules for each traveler's citizenship.

  • Confirm the cruise line's requirements.

  • Consider the documents needed if your return journey changes to an international flight.
