But stepping into it without knowing what to expect can lead to avoidable surprises — and I never want that for my clients. This guide covers what I tell every first-time cruiser before they board.

Choosing the Right Cruise Line

Not all cruise lines are the same, and choosing the wrong one for your style can shape the entire experience. Here is a simple breakdown:

Carnival Cruise Line: Best for first-timers who want a fun, value-forward experience. Great onboard entertainment, family-friendly, and easy to navigate. Perfect for groups and celebrations.

Royal Caribbean: Big ships, big activities. If you want waterslides, rock climbing walls, and Broadway-style shows, this is your line. Great for families and adventure travelers.

Disney Cruise Line: Magical for families with children, but also genuinely excellent for adults. Character experiences, immaculate service, and destinations that include Disney's private island.

Virgin Voyages: Adults-only (18+), stylish, and social. Dining and WiFi included. Perfect for couples, friends trips, and milestone celebrations.

Princess Cruises: Destination-focused and relaxed. Ideal for longer voyages, Alaska, or travelers who want the journey to feel as meaningful as the ports.

Celebrity Cruises: Modern luxury. Elevated dining, beautiful ships, and a sophisticated vibe. Great for couples and food-focused travelers.

Understanding What Is and Is Not Included

This is where first-time cruisers are most often caught off guard. Most cruise fares cover your cabin, meals in the main dining venues, non-alcoholic drinks in certain settings, and onboard entertainment. What is often extra:

Cabins: Inside, Oceanview, Balcony, or Suite?

Inside cabin: No window. Less expensive. Fine if you plan to spend most of your time outside the room. Some travelers love the dark, cool environment for sleeping.

Oceanview: A porthole or window. Natural light without the balcony price.

Balcony: The upgrade most travelers wish they had made from the start. Private outdoor space to wake up to the sea or watch a sunset.

Suite: Larger space, often with dedicated butler service, priority boarding, and exclusive lounge access. If budget allows, it transforms the experience.

For a first cruise, I often recommend a balcony cabin if the budget allows. Waking up to the ocean from your own private space is one of the defining cruise experiences.

Shore Excursions: Book Through the Ship or Independently?

Both have advantages. Ship-sponsored excursions come with a guarantee — if the excursion runs long, the ship waits for you. Independent excursions (booked through vetted local operators) are often more personalized, smaller group sizes, and better value.

Packing for a Cruise

Essential items: - Passport and travel documents (keep copies in your carry-on) - Sunscreen (reef-safe is required at many destinations) - Seasickness medication — even if you think you will be fine, have it available - Formal or dressy outfit for formal night (some lines still have them) - Comfortable walking shoes for port days - Power strip with USB ports (ships have limited outlets in cabins) - Reusable water bottle

Leave at home: - Candles and irons (not permitted onboard) - Full-sized toiletries (take up packing space you need)

What to Expect on Boarding Day

Embarkation day has a rhythm. You arrive at the terminal, check your bags, go through security, and board — but your cabin may not be ready until early afternoon. Head to the buffet, explore the ship, find your cabin number, and resist the urge to immediately unpack. Attend the mandatory safety drill, find your muster station, and then enjoy the sail-away. There is nothing quite like watching a port city get smaller as you head out to sea.
